Exchanging Money

Exchanging money is SUPER easy if you do it the right way.
Make sure your US dollars are CRISP. Go to the hotel Lobby in the morning and ask to exchange. For a typical day, I would take a crisp $100 and get that exchanged. It was my way of pacing myself. What I didn't spend could roll over to the next day. I tend to go a little overboard with the shopping. I did all but one exchange at the hotel. They might not understand everything you say but they understand 'exhange", expected crisp money and sometimes you have to sign for the exchange...but not always...not sure about that. The Victory has a limit on the $ they can exchange per day. If you show up at 7pm...they might be all out. Best BET...always exchange bright and early. Now, my daughter was adopted in Guangzhou and I was told my donation would be accepted in US dollars. There I stood with my new daughter in my arms attempting to hand them our donation in US dollars and they refused. It needed to be exchanged. There is a bank of the first floor of the building we were in. It took our group ALMOST TWO HOURS to get their exchange...and two hours only because rumor had it that our guide went down and flipped out in the bank. Then...my best friend who took my money went last because she wanted the men to be able to get up their with their new children...she figured I would understand (I did, completely) anyway. After then men left, they decided to deny her money. Once again, we had to go get our guide...my friend REFUSED to leave the cash window...she's a stubborn little blonde girl...funny when you look back...painful when you relive it. This could have ALL BEEN AVOIDED. Banks take a HORRENDOUS amount of time. I don't know what the solution is to the donation exchange... just do it ahead of time so you can focus on your child on THAT DAY!

Welcome to my
Guangzhou Link.
Below are all the posts of my time in Guangzhou starting with the most recent and working backwards. Once at the bottom of the page, if you click "older posts" it will continue with my time in GZ. I guess with blogger they only allow so many posts per page when it comes to these links! Thanks and enjoy.

Carrefour in China

For all those waiting parents that know that they are going straight to Guangzhou for Gotcha day...PACK LIGHT!! Trust me! The moment you arrive in Guangzhou at your hotel, get your guide to give you the hotel business card and write Carrefour on it. Jump in a taxi and go there. It is usually 11 to 12 yuan which is about $2, each way.

I had heard through my internet groups that this is the place to go and that they have everything! So, I gather up a bunch of families and lead them there. When we got out of the taxi there is this large building and I assume this is the Carrefour! There is a sign for Carrefour but this is a pricey mall. I was confused and thought that I must have misunderstood ALL those people online. We exit the mall and there is the sign for Carrefour and I'm just dumb-founded. Then, thanks to Karen, she notices another entrance. Just to the left of the main mall enterance is the "right" entrance. Carrefour is an underground market below the mall. Two stories beneath the mall to be exact. It's HUGE, and crazy! I LOVED IT!!!!! (go to green arrow entrance, not red arrow mall) Hey, it was dark and I was excited!! My bad. LOL.

They have EVERYTHING! Come to find out you are not supposed to take photos!! Oops, I took a bunch that show the prices of everything. Prices are in YUAN. How much in US dollars??? all depends on the current exchange rate. We just divided by six for a guestimate. Check out the photos here of a bunch of items you might find useful for your little ones.

Pearl Market

For those of you who have not yet had the Pearl Market experience, you might not believe me but this mall is five stories and I would say 80% of the shops are Pearls and precious stones!! It is truely unbelievable!!!
This was the store that supposidly had the "top quality" stuff!!

Giorgia's Pearl Market experience!! (I swear I don't make this up!! My girl likes her naps and she doesn't care it they are to be had in a stroller!!!)

I had a few purchases here. The girl right next to me helped me pick out my pearls and actually strung them right there in front of me. Double knot and clasps too!! They were super nice but then again there were approximatley 30 Americans chomping at the bit for their "top quality" pearls!!!

The Real China

Finally, the REAL China!!
The decorations are starting to go up for the Chinese New Year! You can even see a McDonalds in the background. Tastes JUST LIKE home!

Very Interesting snack choices!
