Is your child getting enough sleep?

Parents often think that if their child isn't falling asleep before 10 p.m. it's because she doesn't need much sleep. But experts agree the opposite may be true. Children who are sleep deprived or overtired at bedtime may actually become hyper.

To see if your child falls into this category, ask yourself the following questions: Is my child cranky, irritable or overtired during the day? Do I have to wake him most mornings? Does he frequently fall asleep while riding in the car? If the answer is yes to any of these, your child may not be getting enough sleep.

Following is a list of recommended hours of sleep (nap and night included) for different ages. Note these are approximations and may vary by individual.

• Birth to 1 year: 10 to 16 hours
• 1 to 2 years: 11 to 16 hours
• 2 to 3 years: 11 to 14 hours
• 3 to 4 years: 10 to 13 hours
• 4 to 5 years: 10 to 12 1/2 hours
• 5 to 6 years: 10 to 11 1/2 hours
• 6 to 7 years: 9 to 11 1/2 hours

Homemade Bread Sticks for Baby

by Rachel Paxton

Is your baby teething? Homemade bread sticks are easy to make and are great teething biscuits for older babies. You can make bread sticks out of most any kind of bread by baking at a low temperature (150-200 degrees) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until bread sticks are hard and crunchy.
For the recipes below, after baking, let bread cool. Slice bread into "sticks" and bake at 150-200 degrees for 1 hour. Store in airtight container. Your baby will love it!

Banana Bread

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 bananas, mashed
2 cups flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Add mashed bananas and mix well. Blend in other ingredients. Pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake for about 45 minutes.

Carrot Bread

2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups carrots, grated
3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake for 1 hour.

Apple Bread

3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/4 cups oil
2 apples, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients until well blended. Pour batter into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake for about 1 hour.

Airport Water Bottle Restrictions

You know how we all love to bring our water bottles on the plane but they won't let you bring it past security now!? Well, I just read this frugal tip and this is exactly want I'm going to do...

"I just got back from vacation and learned this tip from a fellow traveler. Bring your own water bottle with water in it. Empty the water bottle right before going through security. Refill the water bottle at a water fountain near the restrooms and save $3 or more. Janet H."

Organizing Hair Accessories

My friend and Precious Panda, Donna, had a great post today. She was organizing all of Lauren Elizabeth's clothes in the closet. Little girl clothes are just the cutest and I can't get enough!!!! I just LOVE looking at everyones closet. Gotta LOVE those organizers Donna. You are definately a girl after my own heart.

So, Donna posted a bunch of great questions. Here are my answers below:
Is there a good way to store hair clips and hats?

I found that these clear, over the door, shoe holders are awesome!!!

Is it best to hang only dresses and fold everything else up in drawers?

Personally, I hang almost everything. In Giorgi's closet, I am only hanging up to twelve month clothing. I have all other clothing in bins, sorted by size. My goal is to have in her closet, the size she is currently wearing and the next size up. It looks like I have a lot but I really don't. I am grateful to friends that have given me bags full of clothing from their little girls. (and my clearance finds and yard sale items) Oh, and I have a drawers for pajamas, onsies, socks and bathing suits. Everything else will be hung. (Everything in my wardrobe is hung as well) I guess it's just what's easier for you.

Do they make kiddie hangers to hang matching tops and pants on one hanger?

I would think they do but I haven't really seen them. I am trying to save the hangers from purchases to hang the clothes. For now I just use regular hangers and hang them side by side or hang one hanger onto another.

What about those headbands that match a specific outfit? Loop them over the hanger with the outfit?

I would just put this one in the over the door accessory holder but hanging over the outfit hanger is a very good idea.
Let's see everyones closet and cool ideas!!!

Sofa & Loveseat

Okay, I just ordered my Sofa & Loveseat! I really think I love them!
Same color too. I know, I know, who buys a off white sofa when they have a pet and are expecting a child. Well, I've had a white sofa since my first apartment and yes, I've had pets eventually take their toll on them and needed a slipcover. But, in the sofa's defense, it looked good for a really long time. Anyway, these two new pieces are that new microfiber that's out that are supposed to be stain resistant. Plus, I bought a 10 year fabric warranty on them. It covers so many things: food & beverage stains, normal household grease or oil stains from food, human & pet bodily fluid stains (including blood), and accidental damage. Can you believe it! I guess only time will tell, but with a protection like that, it's make me less nervous to have a off white sofa.

The provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanxi and the Guangxi autonomous region would suffer heavy rainfall, meteorologists said.

Mastectomy Bill in Congress

From a nurse:

I'll never forget the look in my patients' eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast(s). I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies. So there I sat with my patient giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank you' they muttered. A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important.. Please take the time and do it really quick! Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know who will do the same. There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on. PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site.

You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

http://www.lifetimetv.com/breastcancer/petition/signpetition.php

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and
family, and on behalf of all women, THANKS. :)

Scabies(SKAY-bees)

What is scabies?

Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.
What are the signs and symptoms of scabies infestation?

Pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin, especially the webbing between the fingers; the skin folds on the wrist, elbow, or knee; the penis, the breast, or shoulder blades.
Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.

Sores on the body caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected with bacteria.

How did I get scabies?

By direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person already infested with scabies. Contact must be prolonged (a quick handshake or hug will usually not spread infestation). Infestation is easily spread to sexual partners and household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and bedding.

Who is at risk for severe infestation?

People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at risk for a more severe form of scabies, called Norwegian or crusted scabies.

How long will mites live?

Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. When living on a person, an adult female mite can live up to a month.

Did my pet spread scabies to me?

No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is infested with scabies, (also called mange) and they have close contact with you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation. However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated, mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms.

How soon after infestation will symptoms begin?

For a person who has never been infested with scabies, symptoms may take 4-6 weeks to begin. For a person who has had scabies, symptoms appear within several days. You do not become immune to an infestation.

How is scabies infestation diagnosed?

Diagnosis is most commonly made by looking at the burrows or rash. A skin scraping may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter to confirm the diagnosis. If a skin scraping or biopsy is taken and returns negative, it is possible that you may still be infested. Typically, there are fewer than 10 mites on the entire body of an infested person; this makes it easy for an infestation to be missed.

Can scabies be treated?

Yes. Several lotions are available to treat scabies. Always follow the directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert. Apply lotion to a clean body from the neck down to the toes and left overnight (8 hours). After 8 hours, take a bath or shower to wash off the lotion. Put on clean clothes. All clothes, bedding, and towels used by the infested person 2 days before treatment should be washed in hot water; dry in a hot dryer. A second treatment of the body with the same lotion may be necessary 7-10 days later. Pregnant women and children are often treated with milder scabies medications.

Who should be treated for scabies?

Anyone who is diagnosed with scabies, as well as his or her sexual partners and persons who have close, prolonged contact to the infested person should also be treated. If your health care provider has instructed family members to be treated, everyone should receive treatment at the same time to prevent reinfestation.

How soon after treatment will I feel better?

Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks, and does not mean that you are still infested. Your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to relieve itching if it is severe. No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after effective treatment.

This fact sheet is for information only and is not meant to be used for self-diagnosis or as a substitute for consultation with a health care provider. If you have any questions about the disease described above or think that you may have a parasitic infection, consult a health care provider. This info came from here.

Secret Crush

It's a TIE! There is NO WAY TO CHOOSE! (Thanks Susan!)

Leo and Jack

Let me know if you just LOVE them too! (or who your favorite is)

Ironically I just got a scoop... Leo To Play Hef?... Word is Leonardo DiCaprio has been approached to play Hugh Hefner in the upcoming biopic of the Playboy founder's life. Leo is a friend of Hefner and a regular visitor to the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles. (no suprise there) Media outlets have quoted an unnamed source as saying: "Leo and Hugh have been friends for a long time and Leo has always been interested in Hugh's life story. "Leo thinks it would make a great movie and Hugh would love Leo to do it - on condition Hugh is alive to see it." (I'd go see it!)

Which do YOU like?

(actually Karen had a great question...one of my best friends just bought this exact couch but in different color. The back cushions ARE attached and it's like a microsuede finish called Durapella. It's is supposed to be stain resistant. She has a warranty that if anything happens to it they will replace. So far, in one weekend, her new couch survived many freeze pop spills, soda, fried chicken and blue icing from a birthday cake. I keep checking with her on the status of her sofa. I am very impressed with this durapella stuff. Not sure if the second couch is made of the same stuff. Will definately have to find out! (Thanks for the question Karen)

China moves to lower ‘risk of young love’

Kids’ waltz rules revised after parents’ worries about passions, low grades
The Associated Press

SHANGHAI, China - Chinese educators are toning down plans to teach students to waltz after parents said they worried about puppy love and falling grades, local media reported Monday.
The revised dance steps allow students to dance by themselves or in large groups, the Xinhua News Agency said, without explaining exactly how that would work.

“They don’t have to dance with specific partners, which will be more easily accepted by both students and their parents,” Yin Guochen, an official with the State General Administration of Sports, was quoted as saying.

Xinhua also quoted an Education Ministry official as saying another version would see students organized into groups of four and changing partners with each song.

“This way, the risk of young love would be lowered,” a ministry official, Yang Guiren, was quoted as saying.

Mei Magazine

I just saw this post on Harlow's Monkey...

Mei, a magazine just for adopted Chinese girls. Mei is "a magazine created for Chinese adoptees age 7 to 14. A bimonthly magazine featuring wholesome articles with an emphasis on issues specific to girls adopted from China."

Personally I think it's a FANTASTIC idea! I would almost consider subscribing to it now and save them for when my daughter gets older.

LOL!
