Pirate is HOME!

It's Saturday and I just picked up Pirate. So, he's home although he hates me. I've gotten no kisses yet. It was so sad at the vet, they put him in my arms and he strained his neck so as to NOT look at me. No kisses then, No kisses now. :( He's on his meds but he seems very uncomfortable. Because they had to cut open the urethra-sp and they cannot sew it up, he is currently urinating out of the incision at the base of his prized possession. Not only does he urinate through this but until it closes on it own, it will leak urine and blood. I told the vet I would rather play nursemaid to him at home then have him lonely at the hospital. The first floor of my house is covered in sheets and towels that can be washed easily. Anything for my baby. He is spending most of the day in the kitchen that is blocked off with a baby gate. One of his favorite things to do is sit in the sun by the front door and occasionally the neighbor cat will be by to torture him. Below is a photo of him by the door and one of the neighbor cat that can't figure out why he's walking funny and not barking up a storm at the site of him. Kind of Cute.

Tornado!!

Just when I think my life is completely filled with drama...more tragedy strikes.

Central Florida was hit with its worst tornado in a decade. It has claimed the lives of 14 people so far and left many without their homes. Almost my entire family lives in Florida. My mom is in Key West, my father and stepmom live in The Villages and stepsister just outside of The Villages. My father and step mom's house was in the tornados path. Luckily for them, they were on the outskirts. They are ok but they lost part of their new addition. They had just completed the addition not too long ago. They said it was so unbelievably scary but they consider themselves so very lucky. Homes all around them were destroyed. Below are some of the photos of the homes in The Villages. My dad said he is going to take some photos and send me, so I will post more when I get them.

FANCY NANCY

Fancy Nacy. Another MUST-HAVE book. Wanda sent this book to Susan R. and it's just too cute. Thanks to my PRECIOUS PANDAS for another great find!!

And Thanks to Aunt Deb who gifted this to Giorgia!!!

OUTTA THERE!!!

I'm OUTTA the REVIEW ROOM! Do you have any idea how long I've waited to be out of the Review Room?? This is one of those major milestones in the IA process. Anyone whose been there knows what I'm feeling. This is when the CCAA goes over your dossier with a fine tooth comb looking for anything that they see that they feel would not make me a great parent or for discrepancies within the dossier. Even though all of us that submit dossiers go through the pains of making sure that all of our t's are crossed and our i's are dotted...you just never know. During this time, if a mistake is found or there is questionable info, the CCAA will contact your acency for either clarification or more info. During this time is when all of us "in review" are on pins and needles. Not they we feel that we have anything to worry about...we know that we'd make AWESOME parents. We/I worry that this is conveyed to CCAA. Gosh, if only they could meet us in person...it would make it so much easier!
Anyway...Yipee...I've passed through Review. ((exhale)) :)

Surgery Today

**NOT SO GOOD NEWS**
Pirate is ok, but not so good news. They got the bladder stones out but some attempted to pass. Usually in pets, they don't expect them to pass, only to remain in the bladder. The biggest fear is that you don't want the stones to block the urethra-sp or it could create a toxic situation. The remaining stones NEED to come out so that we don't have this type of situation, the really bad part is that they have to cut open the urethra-sp and take them out. So, he's a boy dog, so that means they have to cute open his prized possession. So sad. I'm not sure of all of the technicallities but I was told that they cannot sew up this opening for a few days. I guess to avoid infection. This also means that he'll have to stay in the hospital probably at least until Monday. This is very sad. I have to wait til noon to call for an update. Say a little prayer for Pirate.
**UPDATE 2/1/07**
This was our self portrait this morning before we left for surgery. It's sad, my baby is very happy today and ready to go for a ride. He seems unaware that he is going to be very mad at me soon. :( The first photo is out in the parking lot and the second...well, he's not real happy with me right now...

These photos are of Pirate trying to be an escape artist!

He's all by himself now at the vet. Poor Baby. I'll be able to call in at noon for his status. I will update.

**CARDIAC SPECIALIST UPDATE**

Okay, I can breathe! Pirate still has a heart mummur but has the go ahead for surgery. No medicine is needed at this time. $452 was the price for peace and I have to say that it hurt my pocket but was totally worth it. They took his blood pressure with a little doggie arm band thing. It was just too cute. Then he had a cardio-echogram. It took 1 doctor and 1 technician to hold all 8 lbs of him down while the specialist did the cardio-echogram. They wanted me to have my face right by his to calm him. He did pretty well but the doctors definately had to be forceful to hold him down. They spent about 20 minutes doing all of the testing, the visit was about 45 minutes and I was very impressed with the staff and specialist. It really, really helps when you really feel like they took the time with you and your pet. I left feeling very optimistic and I'm breathing again...of course.

**UPDATE 1/29/07**

Today @ 3 is Pirate's consult with the Cardiac Specialist and my stomach is in knots. It doesn't help that I got into a screaming match at our Monday Morning meeting. (We are very non-PC at these meetings) Thankfully my point was finally made and my boss backed me up. I did apologize to him for getting him wound up but not for what I said. Anyway, I have more important things to worry about...my baby Pirate. I will fill you in on his update.

Freaking Out Even More...

**UPDATE 1/26/07**

I've now been to the vet for the 3rd time to fix Pirate's issue. (blood in urine) It's official, he has kidney stones...well, actually they are called "bladder stones" and he needs surgery. Bad news, my vet can't do the surgery but another in the practice can. But I want my vet! :( I guess I will have to settle with another since I cannot prolong this for very long. Surgery is scheduled for Feb 1st....

The reason I am freaking out even more is that it has been discovered that Pirate has a heart mummer with a rating of 3 (3 out of 6, 6 being the worst). They will not do the surgery until I see a cardiac specialist. Just to walk in to this consult...$400. So, I am looking at approx. $1200. Argh. Don't get me wrong, there is NO question that I will do anything for my baby Pirate, it just means taking a hit on my baby fund, and any of the trips I was contemplating. Sorry Savannah an

Asian Flush

This was a post on one of my yahoo group that I found very interesting. I thought it would be okay to post since she said it was okay to share with other groups...
"I just read an article of interest to parents as our children approach the teen years.
Asian Flush is a hereditary condition common to 40% of Asians (45% ofChinese) that make their systems unable to process alcohol normally. Those with this condition have no symptoms until they drink alcohol, with a red flush to their face and rapid onset of intoxication, even with small amounts of alcohol. With this inability to metabolize alcohol there may be a build up of the toxin acetaldehyde, resulting in red blotchy skin, dizziness, nausea and an irregular heart beat. With recurrent ingestion of alcohol this poison makes the individual more prone to alcohol related diseases long term, including liver and esophageal cancer.
According to the article I read, there is genetic testing available for the deficient gene. I was unable to find out more information about this. It is important for parents to know about this disorder, particularly to be pro-active in educating our pre-teens about how alcohol may affect our children even more than the others. Teen drinking is a huge issue for any family, but for our children it could be deadly.
Please feel free to share this with other groups.

Chopsticks Anyone?

Just my opinion...

If you are going to China, know how to use CHOPSTICKS! Practice makes perfect so get on it! It's so easy and fun.

Pirate's Addiction

Since he's been really good through out all of these doctor visits, I've been giving in to his ADDICTION!

It's DORA. I bought Giorgia a little Dora Hula figurine for bathtime. One day when I was taking a bath in her bathroom, Pirate spotted it. He went nuts. I now have to keep her bathroom door shut when I'm not in there!! I decided to let him play with it and took some video. IYES, I am a Dork but isn't he cute?

CHOKABLE FOODS

My Panda friend has friends who are experiencing the unthinkable right now. Their one year old son got a hold of some popcorn and aspirated it. Both parents were trained on CPR. So, no matter how careful you are as a parent or how qualified in CPR...things can happen in the blink of an eye. Their loss is imaginable and this prompted my post.
Please, Please become certified in CPR. You can save the life of your own child or some one elses or at least give them a fighting chance. I am not responsible for the info below, it is just information that was found on the internet. Please do not substitute it for your own research. Thank You.

To minimize the risk of a baby or toddler choking, follow these safe feeding tips:

Be careful of big globs of food, such as golf ball-sized, pasty globs of white bread or spoonfuls of peanut butter. Even though these foods are soft, babies can choke on them. Don't spread peanut butter too thick, and monitor how quickly the bread gets packed into the mouth. The more whole grains in a bread, the less likely it is to form a pasty glob.
Check the chunks. Once baby's molars appear (usually around the middle of the second year), chunky soft fruits (such as fruit cocktail-type size and texture) are safe.
Allow toddlers finger foods only under supervision. Be sure they stay seated as they eat and are not lying down or running around. Choose snacks for the car carefully.
Hold the hot-dogs . Since hotdogs are neither nutritious nor safe for baby, you can scratch them from the diet. If you are fortunate enough to find a healthy hotdog (nitrite-free, low in salt), slice it lengthwise in thin, noodle-like strips. Don't let your toddler bite chunks off a hotdog, since a hotdog chunk is about the size of a baby's windpipe.
Avoid raw fruits and vegetables that snap into hard chunks, such as carrot and celery sticks and firm apples.
Peel and slice grapes. Whole grapes can cause choking.
CHOKABLE FOODS
  • cherries with pits
  • meat
  • chunks
  • candy, hard
  • nuts
  • hot dog, whole chunks
  • popcorn
  • popcorn kernels
  • raisins
  • raw apples, pears, carrots, beans
  • stringy foods
  • whole olives whole grapes

Keep small objects out of reach from your child such as coins, small toys and game pieces, peanuts, balloons, and beads. A good rule of thumb is if the object fits inside a toilet paper roll cylinder, it is small enough to choke on.

Do not let your child eat away from the table. Many children choke because they are eating and playing at the same time.

Keep your child in your sight while he is eating.

The universal signs of choking include:

  • Inability to speak
  • Weak, ineffective cough
  • Noisy breathing or high pitch when inhaling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Loss of consciousness if airway is not cleared

If your child (over age 1) is choking, do the following:

  • Ask, “Are you choking? Can you speak?”
  • If he cannot cough, cry, or speak, he is choking.
  • Place him on the floor or on a chair standing up. Stand behind him with his back to you. Wrap your arms around his waist.
  • Make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb side of your fist just above the child’s naval and well below the breastbone.
  • Grasp the fist with your other hand.
  • Make quick upward and inward thrusts with your fist. Do not thrust hard enough to lift the child off the floor.
  • Continue these thrusts until the object is dislodged or the child loses consciousness.
  • If he loses consciousness, lower him to the floor, then call 911. Begin CPR. If you can reach the object
  • If the object is not free after 5 blows:
  • Turn the baby face up and support the head.
  • Place 2 fingers on the middle of her breastbone just below the nipples.
  • Give up to 5 quick thrusts down, compressing the chest 1/3 to ½ the depth of the chest.
  • Repeat the process of the 5 back blows and the 5 chest thrusts until the object is dislodged. If the baby becomes unconscious, see if you can reach the object. Start infant CPR and call 911 one minute after beginning CPR.

IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

This is an artcle I found a while back. Look beyond that It is regards to actually giving birth to a child and see that it's about being a mom, no matter how you came to be one.
IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE by Dale Hanson Bourke
A conversation between friends...
We are sitting at lunch when my friend casually mentions that she andher husband are thinking of "starting a family". "We're taking asurvey," she says, half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"
"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my to neneutral. "I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations...."
But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable. I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.
I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a souffle or her best crystal without a moment's hesitation. I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of her discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.
I want my friend to know that everyday decisions will no longer be routine. That a five-year-old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.
Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her off spring, but will also begin to hope for more years - not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs. I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor.
My friend's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.
I wish my friend could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues, but become temporarily insane when I discuss thethreat of nuclear war to my children's future. I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or a cat for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real, it actually hurts.
My friend's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I finally say. Then I reach across the table, squeeze my friend's hand and offer a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings. The blessed gift of God and that of being a Mother.

Giorgia's China Tree

This is the second ornament for Giorgia's China Tree. It's a white swan (obviously) since part of our time in China, we'll be at, of course, the White Swan. I found it at Bombay over the holiday. Her first ornament is from my Precious Pandas DTC Group. I plan to fill her tree with her China Sisters. If anyone would like a place on her tree, please email me a photo. As soon as I can, I will make frames for them and hang them. I just love this idea and I hope lots of you would like me to add your little ones photo. I set up Giorgia with her own email address, GiorgiaDanette@hotmail.com . Please send them there! I don't check this email everyday but I promise to reply if you send a photo to let you know I definately got it. You know how email is sometimes! : )

Favorite Christmas Gift

Did I share with you my favorite Christmas gift this year? I thought it was just so cute. Pat gave me this...It's "GIGI". How cute! Thank you again, I LOVE it!

FINGERPRINTS AGAIN!

My Packing List

My "crazy" Packing List. I finally found an awesome place to store some files that others can link to and download. I'm lovin' it. Click on the link and half way down the page it will appear for you to download. The good thing about this list is that it is in excel form so you can delete all the craziness that you think you won't need.
I also made up a waiting for "The Call" sheet for one of my yahoo groups. Michele was the first one to actually use it for her darling Ava!!! Yeah. You can see what it looks like here. If you want a copy for yourself, download it here.

Pirate Socks

Did I ever share with you the photo of the coolest socks ever! Kathy, my fellow Precious Panda sent them to me for Christmas. I will wear them faithfully every Christmas (and more). I love 'em, they are just soo cool.

Prom Challenge

Prom Challenge from Shannon. This was my 1st Prom.
Was it the 80's or what? LOL. Can you tell any major 80's hints?
There is a story along with this Prom. I will post later today when I get back to the office.

So the story goes…
I had been dating a guy for the whole school year and foolishly assumed that I would be going to prom with him. His ex-girlfriend, whom he dated previously for 3 year, had always been promised that she would be his date for his senior prom. (I did not know this) Wonderful news. Everyone assumed I would be going with him. Anyway, not long before prom did he tell me the deal. Boy, was that a conversation. I was so hurt.
In the mean time, my best guy friend T was taking my best girl friend C and they were going with another couple K & G. A couple days before the Prom, my wild classmate G was being bad and got grounded and now K was without a prom date. So, I was the obvious choice. Don’t get the wrong idea, I wasn’t doing this to be nice so K would be able to go to his senior prom, I did it for evil. ;) I I knew that just my presence at prom would ruin my very recently ex’s ex girlfriends prom experience. (wow, was that a bad grammar or what?) Now, I’m not a “mean girl” and I created NO drama. The best revenge was having a blast!!!

Moral of the story: NEVER ASSUME!!!

Gosh, I even sound like a teenager the way I told the story! LOL.

It's Snowing....

...and I HATE snow!

(from my office window looking at our main building)

Why:
**If it's snowing it's cold out.
**I'll have to wear a coat, gloves, and hat.
**It means that I will have to shovel my driveway.
**My backyard will have little yellow spots all over it ...thanks to Pirate.
**People in my state INSTANTLY forget how to drive...even in light flurries.
**Every grocery store will be out of bread and milk. (once again...even in light flurries.)
**I still have to work, my company won't give us "snow days" unless the state makes it mandatory.
**I have no roaring fireplace at home to cozy up too and...
all of these things just make me sad!

I promise that when I have a little one and they want to go out and build a snowman, I will slap on a smile and do it! But, NOT until then! :)

Hong Kong Limits

A friend sent me an link to an interesting article. I also found a new toy. It's a way for me to share documents with you. So, I am going to give it a try. If you are interested in reading Hong Kong Limits Pregnant Chinese from Entering just click on the title or here.
Okay, so I would be easier for me to link to the article itself but lately I have found news articles to expire quickly.
Oh, and another thing, once you get to the link, at first it looks a bit confusing. Halfway down the page it shows that it's loading and then you can download.
Let me know if it works!

Curse of the Golden Flower

McDreamy's McTwins

I thought this was TOTALLY CUTE!!!
"Ellen DeGeneres gives McDreamy some McBaby Gifts
On the Ellen DeGeneres Show this morning, Ellen gifted guest Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey with her classically funny baby gifts for his twin boys who are due any day now. She gave him matching kiddie scrubs which said, on the back, "McCutie" and "McCuddly." "

Leo Adopting?

"Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly followed in the footsteps of Brangelina and Madonna by adopting an African child - but the Hollywood heartthrob isn't planning on bringing her back to the US.
According to New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, Leo "met a little girl from an orphanage" a few months ago while on location in South Africa filming his latest flick, Blood Diamond.
According to Cindy, the actor "Played with her, talked with her, became fascinated by her," and has now "adopted" her.
But rather than face the possibility of sleepless nights and nappy changes as a single dad, Leo has reportedly opted instead to fund the little girl's upbringing in her native country and check in on her progress with regular phone calls.
During his time in Africa, Leo spent time with the SOS Children's Village Charity, which provides children who have lost parents with a stable home environment.
The actor is also active supporter of environmental issues, having started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to raise awareness on issues including global warming and renewable energy.
What a guy!"

Toy Chest

Another Refinishing project. Turned out great especially since I purchased the chest for only $1.00!

"Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people." ~the Painted Veil

The Painted Veil

Movie Trailer

Summary & Photos

"Based on the classic novel by W. Somerset Maugham, “The Painted Veil” is a love story set in the 1920s that tells the story of a young English couple, Walter, a middle class doctor and Kitty, an upper-class woman, who gets married for the wrong reasons and relocate to Shanghai, where she falls in love with someone else. When he uncovers her infidelity, in an act of vengeance, he accepts a job in a remote village in China ravaged by a deadly epidemic, and takes her along. Their journey brings meaning to their relationship and gives them purpose in one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth. "

Edward Norton Buys Rice Field for Film...

Edward Norton went to extreme measures to make his new movie 'The Painted Veil' look perfect by purchasing an entire village's rice crop so the plants would be the right height. Ed, was also a producer on the film and negotiated with the Chinese government to make the purchase. He explains, "We had to avoid the rainy season, but we still wanted to have the big, beautiful green rice. Earlier we went into the valley and spoke to the provincial head and he said, 'You can't cut the rice.' I said, 'We've got to have rice for these shots. What do we have to do?' We ended up buying the rice crop of the entire county in advance to get them to plant it a month late. We gave it back to them to sell it - so they got a two-for-one deal. They thought we were insane!"

Review Room

Can I PLEASE be out of the review room soon! It was my Christmas wish this year. I see that you are running a bit behind and I am patiently waiting. Please don't make me wait too much longer!! It's driving me bonkers and it's making me check your website EVERY day! ...Pretty please with a cherry on top!! :)

Tolly

Here is my mom's furry baby, Tolly. She is a yorkie just like Pirate!!! Cute, huh?

Giorgia's Mini Tree

I am still looking for that 3ft. White Christmas tree for Giorgia. CAN'T find it anywhere. I should have bought it a month ago! Argh. Anyway, I stumbled this ugly little white, red, and silver tree.

This is how I revamped it. (click on tree to enlarge)

I matched it to her faux sky wall. Soon, I will add some homemade crystal ornaments. (gotta have sparkly). I also temporarily covered the red base. When it's warmer out, I will repaint it so it looks a little nicer. So, she'll only have this one little tree in her room until I can find the 3ft one. Maybe next year!

Save the Dolphins

World's Tallest Man Saves China Dolphins
Thursday, December 14, 2006 7:28 AM EST
The Associated Press

“BEIJING (AP) — The long arms of the world's tallest man reached in and saved two dolphins by pulling out plastic from their stomachs, state media and an aquarium official said Thursday.
The dolphins got sick after nibbling on plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in Liaoning province. Attempts to use surgical instruments to remove the plastic failed because the dolphins' stomachs contracted in response to the instruments, the China Daily newspaper reported.
Veterinarians then decided to ask for help from Bao Xishun, a 7-foot-9 herdsman from Inner Mongolia with 41.7-inch arms, state media said.”
"Some very small plastic pieces are still left in the dolphins' stomachs," Zhu Xiaoling, a local doctor, told Xinhua. "However the dolphins will be able to digest these and are expected to recover soon."

Holiday Traditions?

Looking for Holiday Traditions. As a single person, my holiday traditions are not very "child" friendly. I think I've spent 10 or so of the last Christmas in Sunny Key West and on Christmas day, my mom and I usually go to the theatre and watch three movies and eat lots of candy. I know some of you are probably cringing right now but it works for us. I still decorated my home for the holidays and enjoy the spirit and gift giving. I still visit with family and friends. But, it's hard to do it "on" Christmas. Everyone has their families and their obligations. Some of you singles out there might get what I mean. Anyway, when I was younger, we had more traditional holidays. Now that the holidays are in full swing, I think about my first Christmas with my daughter? (may she PLEASE, PLEASE be hear by Xmas 2007)

So, this brings me to holiday tradition. I am looking to start some holiday traditions with the two of us! I am accepting ideas! I would love to hear of traditions that are very special to you now or want to create with your child once home! Drop me a comment and help me create some special cool holiday traditions! Thanks.

Yarn?

Okay...this sucks... I mean...did they have to say "DISHCLOTH" ???? :(

You are Dishcloth Cotton. You are a very hard worker, most at home when you're at home. You are thrifty and seemingly born to clean. You are considered to be a Plain Jane, but you are too practical to notice.
Take this
quiz!

My Fish Tree

This year, I'm really not ready for Christmas. I "thought" that my Giorgia would be home by now. But she won't be and I'm just not in the mood for all the decorating! I have a couple 3 ft. trees that I will put up but the big one won't happen this year. This is one of my little themed trees that I have up. It's my fish tree!

Air Travel with Kids

Found this interesting tip on one of my newsletters. For all of you BTDT parents...this is probably not new news but for some of us first-timers...I found it informative!!! "Traveling by Air with Kids" Allow extra time for getting through security, especially if you're taking a car seat & stroller. Sometimes the stroller doesn't fit through the scanner and they have to take it off somewhere to manually scan it. Make sure you put bottle, sippy cups, anything with liquid in it in a ziplock back they will leak in flight do to the pressure. I always take DOUBLE the diapers you think you need onboard. We have sat for hours on runways due to Air Traffic Control problems or weather. Being 4 1/2 mos. old, you aren't needing REAL milk, but for others reading this, a lot of airlines no longer carry milk as it winds up getting tossed at the next stop."
...this is a work in progress...tips anyone?
Things that I have read that parents are bringing to help entertain the kids:

FOOD: cracker snacks, fruit snacks, Cherrios, Pepperidge Farm gold fish, Chex cereal, dum dum pops -- give them all wrapped up and it is an activity to open them AND to eat them.

TOYS: portable DVD player small stuffed animals, stacking cups, animal flash cards, tiny IKEA finger puppets (a big hit), little Fisher Price people, new books she has not seen before, crayons if they are old enough, stickers, a sticker book that has the static cling stickers that you can stick over and over

MISC: blanket, a full change of clothes

Gigi Books

I stumbled across another adoption blog and I saw two of these new books that they had just purchased for their future daughter! They look so cute. I think I will head out to Borders to check them out in person. I'm learning not to buy books online. Sometimes it's just the cover that I'm attracted to. So, the inside has to match the outside and the story has to be cute! Hopefully Borders will have them for me to look at! Anyone seen them before?

Starfish Story

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide. The man was stuck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf. As he came up to the person he said, "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned back to the man and said, "It sure made a difference to that one!"
