Mastectomy Bill in Congress
I'll never forget the look in my patients' eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast(s). I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies. So there I sat with my patient giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank you' they muttered. A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.
It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important.. Please take the time and do it really quick! Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.
Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know who will do the same. There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.
Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on. PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site.
You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and
family, and on behalf of all women, THANKS. :)
Scabies(SKAY-bees)
What is scabies?
Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.
What are the signs and symptoms of scabies infestation?
Pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin, especially the webbing between the fingers; the skin folds on the wrist, elbow, or knee; the penis, the breast, or shoulder blades.
Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.
Sores on the body caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected with bacteria.
How did I get scabies?
By direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person already infested with scabies. Contact must be prolonged (a quick handshake or hug will usually not spread infestation). Infestation is easily spread to sexual partners and household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and bedding.
Who is at risk for severe infestation?
People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at risk for a more severe form of scabies, called Norwegian or crusted scabies.
How long will mites live?
Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. When living on a person, an adult female mite can live up to a month.
Did my pet spread scabies to me?
No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is infested with scabies, (also called mange) and they have close contact with you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation. However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated, mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms.
How soon after infestation will symptoms begin?
For a person who has never been infested with scabies, symptoms may take 4-6 weeks to begin. For a person who has had scabies, symptoms appear within several days. You do not become immune to an infestation.
How is scabies infestation diagnosed?
Diagnosis is most commonly made by looking at the burrows or rash. A skin scraping may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter to confirm the diagnosis. If a skin scraping or biopsy is taken and returns negative, it is possible that you may still be infested. Typically, there are fewer than 10 mites on the entire body of an infested person; this makes it easy for an infestation to be missed.
Can scabies be treated?
Yes. Several lotions are available to treat scabies. Always follow the directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert. Apply lotion to a clean body from the neck down to the toes and left overnight (8 hours). After 8 hours, take a bath or shower to wash off the lotion. Put on clean clothes. All clothes, bedding, and towels used by the infested person 2 days before treatment should be washed in hot water; dry in a hot dryer. A second treatment of the body with the same lotion may be necessary 7-10 days later. Pregnant women and children are often treated with milder scabies medications.
Who should be treated for scabies?
Anyone who is diagnosed with scabies, as well as his or her sexual partners and persons who have close, prolonged contact to the infested person should also be treated. If your health care provider has instructed family members to be treated, everyone should receive treatment at the same time to prevent reinfestation.
How soon after treatment will I feel better?
Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks, and does not mean that you are still infested. Your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to relieve itching if it is severe. No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after effective treatment.
This fact sheet is for information only and is not meant to be used for self-diagnosis or as a substitute for consultation with a health care provider. If you have any questions about the disease described above or think that you may have a parasitic infection, consult a health care provider. This info came from here.

Leo and Jack
Let me know if you just LOVE them too! (or who your favorite is)
Ironically I just got a scoop... Leo To Play Hef?... Word is Leonardo DiCaprio has been approached to play Hugh Hefner in the upcoming biopic of the Playboy founder's life. Leo is a friend of Hefner and a regular visitor to the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles. (no suprise there) Media outlets have quoted an unnamed source as saying: "Leo and Hugh have been friends for a long time and Leo has always been interested in Hugh's life story. "Leo thinks it would make a great movie and Hugh would love Leo to do it - on condition Hugh is alive to see it." (I'd go see it!)

China moves to lower ‘risk of young love’
SHANGHAI, China - Chinese educators are toning down plans to teach students to waltz after parents said they worried about puppy love and falling grades, local media reported Monday.
The revised dance steps allow students to dance by themselves or in large groups, the Xinhua News Agency said, without explaining exactly how that would work.
“They don’t have to dance with specific partners, which will be more easily accepted by both students and their parents,” Yin Guochen, an official with the State General Administration of Sports, was quoted as saying.
Xinhua also quoted an Education Ministry official as saying another version would see students organized into groups of four and changing partners with each song.
“This way, the risk of young love would be lowered,” a ministry official, Yang Guiren, was quoted as saying.

Asian Festival (Local)
Well, I did make it to the Asian Festival just in time to see the cooking demo! I made my way inside only to find out that there was a sign up for it and it was full. So sad. L That’s the only thing I really wanted to see/do. Outside, all the food looked SO GOOD but I was on my way to a BBQ at a friends. Atleast I got the chance to finally see the Chinese Community Center and walk around and see what they had to sell, all the art work and a fun room where they had lots of crafts and stuff for the kids. I tried to spot other adoptive parents but with no luck. Sorry I missed you Kim, I know you were all there much earlier. No worries, when I have my little one home…we’ll be there again!

When...
I feel like my life has been on hold, sort of. I need to make some big decisions regarding a new couch and new hardwood floors in my downstairs. I thought that I would wait until I got my adoption tax refund to put it towards these things. But, with the longer wait, should I just go ahead and do it now? What if I do it now and referrals really speed up? I plan on paying for all adoption related fees in cash. I will not be financing anything and want to have my credit cards paid off before I bring Giorgi home. I'm actually obsessed with the whole money thing. You know, making sure I have enough for travel, being out of work for two months, medicals stuff, daycare down payments, portraits, diapers, formula...
I'll be fine, I just feel like maybe I shouldn't redo the floors and get the couch. Fear of spending that money and then really needing it.
If you haven't guessed, I am trying out a new life without credit cards! I think that might change. lol. I never had these thoughts when plastic was in my hand!!! I must be nuts. So, with this extended wait, should I spring for the MUCH needed couch and flooring or leave it in the bank for what if, whenever that might be??

Post Adoption Depression (PAD)
I think this is a topic that is very important for all of us to explore. I feel our agencies are so busy with paperchasing, referrals and in China services that they don't focus on some of the aftermath of adoption. I am not judging them, I just think it's important that we take this into our own hands. It will only benefit us.
I did lots of research on the topic and wanted to post a sort of outline to illustrate the Symptoms, Reasons, and things to help anyone that has PAD. Obviously, I am not a doctor so never substitute something I've posted over your doctor's recommendation. This is just a guideline to help educate us on PAD.
I have also saved this in pdf form. Download HERE!

Vaccinations

Hepatitis A - Transmission of hepatitis A virus can occur through direct person-to-person contact; through exposure to contaminated water, ice, or shellfish harvested in contaminated water; or from fruits, vegetables, or other foods that are eaten uncooked and that were contaminated during harvesting or subsequent handling. Hepatitis A is the most common vaccine-preventable infection acquired during travel.
Shots - The hepatitis A series consists of two doses given 6-18 months apart. If you started either series but didn't get all the doses, you should continue where you left off.
Hepatitis B - Especially if you might be exposed to blood or body fluids (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, or be exposed through medical treatment. In addition, open skin lesions, such as those due to impetigo, scabies, or scratched insect bites, can play a role in HBV transmission if direct exposure to wound exudates from HBV-infected persons occurs. There are many children adopted that have scabies.
Shots - The hepatitis B vaccine series consists of three doses spaced out over approximately 6 months.
Are these shots safe? Do they have any side effects?
Both hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines have been proven to be safe. Globally, more than one billion hepatitis B vaccine doses have been given. Since 1995, more than seven million doses of hepatitis A vaccine have been given in the U.S. with no reports of serious health problems linked to the vaccine. Side effects might include soreness at the injection site, headache, and fatigue.
Are these shots effective?
Yes. After three doses of hepatitis B vaccine, at least 90% of healthy young adults develop immunity to HBV infection. Immune compromised people might not respond as well to hepatitis B vaccine. They should be tested 1-2 months after the third dose of vaccine to see if they responded.
*Almost 100% of people are protected from HAV infection after getting two doses of hepatitis A vaccine.

Closet Update Challenge
I've been Challenged! Check out my Closet Update Challenge. Well, I have to say that the photo of Giorgi's closets that are on my blog still look the same. Only clothing 12months or smaller is currently in the closet. I will not buy anymore that small unless my referral inicates that I might need more of that size. 18months to 5t is what I am occassionally picking up. I am limiting myself to 2 rubbermaid totes of each size. Yeah, let's see how that'll work. I put all my cute closet finds at Giorgia's Enchanted Garden. I tell you, I might as well make the most of this wait and get EVERYTHING I need now! : ) Go check out my cute stuff!
